Avicularia purpurea is an arboreal tarantula that is known for its beautiful coloration, which intensifies as the spider matures. Juveniles are fuzzy and purple, and as they mature, their metallic purple coloration becomes more prominent. Despite its beauty, this species can be quite shy and fast, often building silk hammocks in tree hollows. It grows to an adult size of 4–5 inches (10-12.5 cm) in leg span, though it grows slowly compared to other Avicularia species. Being an arboreal tarantula, it thrives in tall, vertical enclosures with proper ventilation and humidity control. It is non-aggressive but can be defensive, flicking urticating hairs if provoked.
Behavior and Temperament: These tarantulas are typically shy and quick, preferring to retreat into their silk shelters. While not overly aggressive, they will defend themselves by flicking urticating hairs if they feel threatened. Due to their speed and agility, they can quickly escape from enclosures, making them better suited for experienced hobbyists.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Avicularia purpurea requires a well-ventilated, vertical enclosure with a substrate that can maintain moisture. Misting can help maintain humidity, but there should always be dry areas in the enclosure. They also require access to a water dish and prefer higher humidity levels, typically around 60-80%. Providing cork bark or a similar surface will give them the opportunity to build their characteristic silk hammocks.
Feeding: They are opportunistic feeders, preferring a diet of insects such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Younger spiders may need smaller prey, while adults can handle larger insects. They should be fed 1-2 times a week.
Additional Information: Avicularia purpurea is an arboreal species and can climb glass, so a well-secured lid is necessary. Although they are considered non-aggressive, they can be skittish and may drop to the ground or attempt to escape when disturbed.
