Haplopelma schmidti, commonly known as the Chinese Earth Tiger, is an Old World tarantula species native to parts of Vietnam and southern China. This species is characterized by its deep brown to dark chocolate coloration with subtle lighter markings on the legs and carapace. As a fossorial tarantula, it naturally constructs deep burrows and prefers to remain hidden underground, emerging primarily to feed.
Behavior and Temperament: Haplopelma schmidti is extremely fast, defensive, and highly reactive when disturbed. Like all Old World tarantulas, it lacks urticating hairs and relies on threat postures and biting as its primary defense mechanisms. Due to its medically significant venom and rapid speed, handling is strongly discouraged. This species is best suited for advanced tarantula keepers familiar with Asian fossorial species.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Provide a secure terrestrial enclosure with deep, compact substrate (minimum 15–20 cm for juveniles and deeper for adults) to support natural burrowing behavior. A slightly moist substrate mixture of coconut fiber and organic soil works well. Maintain moderate to high humidity with proper ventilation to prevent stagnant air. A water dish should always be available.
Feeding: Haplopelma schmidti typically exhibits a strong feeding response and readily accepts live feeder insects such as crickets, roaches, and similar appropriately sized prey. Feeding frequency should be adjusted based on age and size. Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours to maintain enclosure hygiene.
Additional Information: As a potent Old World tarantula, Haplopelma schmidti requires secure, escape-proof housing and confident husbandry practices. With proper care, this species becomes an impressive display tarantula, showcasing classic Asian fossorial behavior and robust growth characteristics.
