Ornithoctoninae sp. Son La, commonly referred to as the Vietnam Earth Tiger (Son La), is an undescribed but distinctive tarantula within the Ornithoctoninae subfamily. Imported primarily from northern Vietnam’s Son La Province, this species exhibits a solid brown to dark brown carapace and legs with subtle patterning that camouflages effectively in leaf litter. As a fossorial tarantula, it prefers deep substrate for burrowing and displays typical Old World defensive behavior.

Behavior and Temperament: Ornithoctoninae sp Son La is best described as defensive, fast, and alert. It does not possess urticating hairs like New World species and relies on speed and bite threats when disturbed. This species is not recommended for handling due to its quick movements and potent defensive response. It is better suited for observation by experienced tarantula hobbyists who understand Old World temperament.

Habitat and Environment Needs: This species thrives in a burrow friendly setup with deep, slightly moist substrate such as a mixture of coconut fiber and potting soil. A minimum of 15–20 cm of substrate depth is ideal for juveniles, with greater depth for adults to facilitate natural burrowing behavior.
