The Curly Hair Tarantula is one of the most recognizable tarantulas in the hobby due to the dense covering of long, curled hairs that give it a unique appearance. Native to Central America, this species is popular among keepers because of its calm temperament and relatively simple care requirements. It is primarily terrestrial and spends much of its time on the ground or inside shallow burrows. Because of its gentle nature and hardy disposition, it is often recommended as an excellent species for beginners entering the tarantula hobby.
Behavior and Temperament:
Generally calm and docile, this species is known for its relaxed temperament. When threatened it may flick urticating hairs as a primary defense but rarely shows aggressive behavior.
Habitat and Environment Needs:
Provide a terrestrial enclosure with adequate floor space and a deep substrate layer for burrowing. Substrate such as coco fiber or soil mix works well. Include a hide and keep the enclosure moderately humid with good ventilation.
Feeding:
Feeds readily on common feeder insects such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Juveniles should be fed smaller prey items while adults can take larger insects.
Additional Information:
This species is slow growing compared to many other tarantulas but has a long lifespan, especially females which can live well over 15 years in captivity.
