Thrixopelma ockerti is a medium sized tarantula native to Peru. It is an unusual species in that it can make use of both terrestrial and elevated spaces, with specimens known to climb and make use of vertical structure. Its dark coloration contrasts beautifully with the reddish orange hairs covering the abdomen, making it an attractive species for collectors.
Behavior and Temperament: Generally calm and relatively docile, although individual temperament can vary. It can be fast moving and may flick urticating hairs when disturbed, so handling is not recommended.
Habitat and Environment Needs: A semi terrestrial setup with opportunities for climbing is suitable. Provide adequate substrate, a secure hide, vertical structure such as cork bark, and good ventilation. The species naturally occurs in Peru, including lowland rainforest habitats.
Feeding: Feed appropriately sized live insects such as crickets, roaches and other suitable feeder insects. Juveniles can be offered smaller prey more frequently, while adults generally require feeding less often.
