Ornithoctoninae sp Long Na is an undescribed Old World tarantula species from Vietnam, closely related to other members of the Ornithoctoninae subfamily. Native to forested regions, this species is recognized for its deep brown to near-black coloration with subtle lighter tones on the legs and carapace. Like many Asian tarantulas, it is fossorial in nature, constructing extensive burrow systems in the wild and in captivity when provided with adequate substrate depth.
Behavior and Temperament: Ornithoctoninae sp Long Na is defensive, extremely fast, and highly alert to disturbances. As an Old World tarantula, it lacks urticating hairs and instead relies on speed, threat postures, and biting as its primary defense mechanisms. Due to its quick reflexes and medically significant venom, handling is strongly discouraged. This species is recommended only for advanced tarantula keepers familiar with Asian fossorial species.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Provide a terrestrial enclosure with deep, compactable substrate (minimum 15–20 cm for juveniles, deeper for adults) to allow natural burrowing behavior. A slightly moist substrate such as coconut fiber mixed with organic soil works well. Maintain good cross ventilation while keeping humidity levels stable to replicate its natural forest floor habitat. Include a water dish at all times.
Feeding: Ornithoctoninae sp Long Na typically has a strong feeding response and readily accepts live feeder insects such as crickets, roaches, or similar appropriately sized prey. Feeding frequency should be adjusted according to age and size. Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours to prevent stress or injury.
Additional Information: As with other Old World tarantulas, Ornithoctoninae sp Long Na possesses potent venom and should be housed securely in an escape-proof enclosure. With proper husbandry, this species becomes an impressive display tarantula, showcasing classic Asian fossorial behavior and rapid growth characteristics.
