Lasiodora parahybana is one of the largest commonly kept tarantula species, growing to an impressive adult leg span. Native to northeastern Brazil, it has a robust body covered in dark hairs with distinctive salmon-pink setae. It is a fast-growing species that benefits from a spacious terrestrial enclosure with deep substrate.
Behavior and Temperament: Often bold and highly food responsive, but may be nervous, fast-moving or defensive when disturbed. It can flick urticating hairs as a defence. Handling is not recommended.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Provide a spacious terrestrial enclosure with deep, firm substrate for digging, a secure hide and a shallow water dish. Maintain good ventilation and a suitable moisture gradient, keeping part of the lower substrate slightly moist without allowing the enclosure to become waterlogged. Avoid excessive enclosure height to reduce the risk of injury from falls.
Feeding: Feed appropriately sized live insects, including crickets, roaches and locusts. Spiderlings generally require smaller prey and more frequent feeding than adults. Remove uneaten prey, particularly when the tarantula is preparing to moult.
Additional Information: This species is popular among keepers for its impressive size and rapid growth. Females can live for many years, while males generally have shorter lifespans. Its urticating hairs can cause significant irritation, so avoid handling and use care during enclosure maintenance.
