Lasiocyano sazimai is a terrestrial tarantula found in Brazil, particularly associated with rocky upland habitats. Formerly known as Pterinopelma sazimai, it displays beautiful iridescent blue colouring and is a popular species among tarantula enthusiasts. It benefits from a secure enclosure with deep substrate, a suitable retreat and good ventilation.
Behavior and Temperament: This species can be skittish, fast-moving and defensive when disturbed. It possesses urticating hairs that it may flick as a defence. Handling is not recommended, and care should be taken during enclosure maintenance.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Provide a terrestrial enclosure with deep, compactable substrate, a secure hide and a shallow water dish. Keep the surface mostly dry while allowing the lower substrate or one area to retain some moisture. Good ventilation is essential, and the enclosure should not remain constantly damp.
Feeding: Feed appropriately sized live insects, including crickets, roaches and locusts. Spiderlings generally require smaller prey and more frequent feeding than adults. Remove uneaten prey, particularly when the tarantula is preparing to moult.
Additional Information: The Brazilian Blue Tarantula is prized for its vivid blue colouration and moderate growth rate. Females generally live longer than males. Due to its defensive potential and quick movements, it is best suited to keepers with some tarantula-keeping experience. Choose captive-bred specimens from reputable sources where possible.
