Long Description :
This species inhabits the tropical forest soil of Southeast Asia, where it spends much of its life underground in silk-lined burrows. Ornithoctoninae sp. Lam Dong is adapted to a fossorial lifestyle, excavating deep tunnels and sheet webs in moist, stable substrate. In captivity, these tarantulas prefer an environment that mimics their natural habitat with ample deep substrate, humidity, and secure covers. As an Old World species, it lacks urticating hairs and relies on speed, retreat, and potent venom as its primary defense.
Behavior and Temperament:
This species is fast, defensive, and reclusive, spending most of its time in burrows and only emerging to ambush prey. Ornithoctoninae tarantulas are not suitable for handling and are best observed in their enclosures. When disturbed, they may bolt into their burrow or assume a defensive posture if cornered.
Habitat and Environment Needs:
Provide a deep substrate layer (20–30 cm or more) suitable for burrowing, with a mix that retains moisture without staying waterlogged. Good ventilation helps prevent mold while maintaining stable temperatures and humidity. Hides such as cork bark pieces or half logs help simulate natural shelter entrances.
Feeding:
Feeder insects such as crickets, roaches, and other suitably sized invertebrates are appropriate. Adults can be fed roughly once a week, while younger slings may eat more frequently depending on growth and activity. Uneaten prey should be removed to maintain enclosure cleanliness.
Additional Information:
As with other Old World terrestrials, this species has potent venom relative to New World tarantulas and should be kept by experienced hobbyists only. A secure, escape-proof lid is important due to the spider’s speed and burrowing instincts.
