Ornithoctoninae sp. “Ho Chi Minh,” often called the Ho Chi Minh Earth Tiger, is a fossorial Old World tarantula originating from Vietnam. This species is renowned for its speed, potent venom, and a beautiful golden carapace contrasted by unique belly striping. It requires deep substrate to burrow and display natural behaviors, and exhibits defensive postures typical of Asian burrowing tarantulas.
Behavior and Temperament: Highly defensive, fast, and skittish. Will bolt into its burrow when threatened and posture defensively rather than flee. Biting is the primary defense mechanism. Not suitable for handling, best observed from a distance.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Requires a deep, moisture-retentive substrate (at least 20–30 cm) for burrowing. Maintain ambient temperatures around 24–28 °C (75–82 °F) and substrate humidity at 65–85%. Provide good ventilation and a shallow water dish. Allow surface substrate to dry slightly while keeping deeper layers damp.
Feeding: Feeds on crickets, roaches, and appropriately sized insects. Slings (small juveniles) eat 2–3 times per week; juveniles/adults feed 1–2 times weekly, adjusting based on abdomen size.
Additional Information: An undescribed species in the Oriental earth tiger group, prized for its color and burrowing behavior. Females may live 10+ years; males have shorter lifespans. Not ideal for beginners due to its speed, defensiveness, and medically significant venom.
