Long Description :
Avicularia tucurui originates from the Tucuruí region of Brazil, where it inhabits humid tropical forests and spends most of its life off the ground, building silk retreats in tree hollows and vegetation. This species is appreciated in the hobby for its manageable temperament paired with an unusual size, sometimes exceeding 20 cm diagonal leg span in adults. With proper husbandry including high humidity, vertical enclosure space, and excellent ventilation these tarantulas thrive and display characteristic Avicularia webbing and climbing behaviour.
Behavior and Temperament:
Avicularia tucurui is generally calm and docile, especially as adults. Like other Avicularia species, it prefers to retreat or jump away when startled rather than display aggressive behaviors. Juveniles may be more skittish and agile, but most specimens do not bite under normal care conditions.
Habitat and Environment Needs:
This species requires a tall, arboreal-style enclosure with plenty of vertical climbing surfaces such as cork bark, branches, and plants. Humidity should be maintained in the moderately high range (around 75-80%) with excellent cross ventilation to prevent stagnant moisture. A water dish and periodic light misting help sustain humidity without oversaturation.
Feeding:
Diet consists primarily of live insects or roaches, and other appropriately sized feeder insects. Spiderlings and juveniles eat smaller prey more frequently, while adults can be fed once a week or every 7–10 days depending on appetite and growth.
Additional Information:
Avicularia tucurui is considered suitable for beginner keepers who have basic experience with arboreal tarantulas, especially those comfortable with maintaining proper humidity and ventilation. Its larger size and vivid coloration make it a popular display species, and while this species has an impressive feeding response, it remains calm compared to more defensive tarantulas.
