Chilobrachys natanicharum, often referred to as the Electric Blue Tarantula, is a recently described Old World species native to Thailand. It has gained significant popularity in the tarantula hobby due to its intense metallic blue coloration on the legs, contrasting with darker body tones. As a member of the Chilobrachys genus, this species is fossorial and spends most of its time within deep burrow systems, emerging primarily to feed.
Behavior and Temperament: Chilobrachys natanicharum is extremely fast, defensive, and highly alert. Like all Old World tarantulas, it lacks urticating hairs and relies on speed, threat displays, and biting as primary defense mechanisms. Handling is strongly discouraged due to its rapid movements and medically significant venom. This species is recommended only for advanced keepers familiar with Asian fossorial tarantulas.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Provide a terrestrial enclosure with deep, compact substrate (minimum 15–20 cm for juveniles, deeper for adults) to encourage natural burrowing behavior. A slightly moist substrate such as coconut fiber mixed with organic soil works well. Maintain moderate ventilation and stable humidity levels to replicate its natural tropical forest environment. A water dish should be available at all times.
Feeding: Chilobrachys natanicharum has a strong feeding response and readily accepts live feeder insects such as crickets, roaches, and other appropriately sized prey. Feeding frequency should be adjusted according to age and size. Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours to maintain enclosure hygiene and reduce stress.
Additional Information: As a potent Old World tarantula species, Chilobrachys natanicharum requires secure, escape-proof housing and confident husbandry practices. With proper care, this species becomes a stunning display tarantula, prized for its vivid blue coloration and characteristic burrowing behavior.
