Behavior and Temperament: Dolichothele exilis is an active, fast-moving and somewhat skittish species. Although generally not considered highly defensive, it may retreat quickly when disturbed. It is an enthusiastic webber and will often cover its enclosure, hide and surrounding décor with thick layers of webbing. It is best observed rather than handled.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Native to Brazil, this species is associated with dry, semi-arid scrubland environments. It is primarily terrestrial and benefits from a horizontal enclosure with suitable substrate, a secure hide and plenty of anchor points for web construction. Provide good ventilation, a water dish and substrate that is mostly dry on the surface with a slightly moist area deeper down.
Feeding: A good appetite can be expected. Offer appropriately sized crickets, roaches, locusts and other suitable feeder insects. Spiderlings should receive smaller prey items. Remove uneaten live prey, particularly when the tarantula is preparing to moult.
Additional Information: This is a dwarf species that makes up for its small size with its activity and impressive webbing. It is an interesting addition to a collection for keepers who enjoy observing natural web-building behaviour. Its speed and skittish nature mean that secure enclosures and careful maintenance are important.
