Chilobrachys dyscolus is a fossorial Old World tarantula native to Vietnam. It typically spends much of its time in a deep burrow lined with dense webbing. Depending on the locality or trade form, specimens may show dark brown, smoky or bluish coloration. It is a fast-moving species with a defensive temperament and is best suited to experienced keepers.
Behavior and Temperament: This species is extremely fast and may become defensive when disturbed. Like other Old World tarantulas, it lacks urticating hairs and may rely on defensive posturing and biting when threatened. Handling is strongly discouraged.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Provide a secure fossorial enclosure with deep, compactable substrate, a suitable starter burrow and a shallow water dish. Maintain a moisture gradient, with part of the lower substrate kept slightly moist while avoiding waterlogged conditions. Good ventilation is essential, and a secure enclosure is particularly important due to its speed.
Feeding: Feed appropriately sized live insects, including crickets, roaches and locusts. Spiderlings generally require smaller prey and more frequent feeding than adults. Remove uneaten prey, especially when the tarantula is preparing to moult.
Additional Information: This species is prized by experienced keepers for its impressive webbing and secretive burrowing behaviour. Its speed and defensive nature make it unsuitable for handling and less suitable for beginners. Trade names such as “Vietnam Blue” may refer to particular colour forms, so confirm the locality or form with the supplier where possible.
