Omothymus violaceopes is a large arboreal tarantula species native to Southeast Asia, particularly Singapore and Malaysia. This species is well known for its metallic blue legs and dark body, making it one of the more visually impressive arboreal tarantulas in the hobby. They are extremely fast and defensive, which means they are best suited to experienced keepers who understand Old World tarantula behavior and handling precautions. When given proper vertical space and hiding structures such as cork bark tubes, they will construct elaborate webbing retreats high in the enclosure.
Behavior and Temperament: This species is known for being very fast, defensive, and highly alert. As an Old World tarantula it lacks urticating hairs and relies on speed, threat displays, and biting as its primary defense. They are not considered suitable for handling and are best appreciated as display animals.
Habitat and Environment Needs: As an arboreal species, Omothymus violaceopes requires a tall enclosure with plenty of vertical climbing surfaces and cork bark tubes for retreats. A slightly humid environment with good ventilation is ideal. Substrate should retain some moisture but not become waterlogged, and a water dish should always be available.
Feeding: This species has a strong feeding response and will readily take a variety of live feeder insects such as crickets, roaches, and other appropriately sized prey items. Juveniles should be fed smaller prey more frequently, while adults can be fed larger prey at longer intervals.
Additional Information: Due to its speed, defensive nature, and potent venom typical of Old World species, Omothymus violaceopes is recommended only for advanced keepers. Proper enclosure security and careful maintenance practices are important to prevent escapes.
