Grammostola rosea is a terrestrial tarantula found in Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. It inhabits dry scrubland and other relatively arid environments, where it shelters beneath rocks or in burrows.
Behavior and Temperament: Generally slow-moving and often docile, although individual temperament varies. It may flick urticating hairs when threatened. Avoid handling and minimise disturbance.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Provide a terrestrial enclosure with a secure hide, suitable substrate for shallow burrowing and a shallow water dish. Good ventilation is important. Avoid excessive humidity and waterlogged substrate.
Feeding: Feed appropriately sized live insects, including crickets, roaches and locusts. This species has a relatively slow metabolism and may refuse food for extended periods. Remove uneaten prey, particularly before moulting.
Additional Information: This species is popular with beginner keepers due to its generally manageable temperament and hardy nature. Females can live for many years, while males typically have shorter lifespans. Growth is slow, and individuals may display varying shades of pink, rose, copper and brown.
