Monocentropus balfouri is a species found exclusively on Socotra Island, part of Yemen. This New World tarantula is well-known for its blue-hued legs, which give it a distinctive and attractive appearance. It is a burrowing species that prefers dry, arid conditions and typically has a more docile temperament than other tarantulas. Although it is not considered aggressive, it will defend itself by rearing up or flicking urticating hairs if threatened. Due to its slow growth and unique look, Monocentropus balfouri is a favorite among advanced hobbyists.
Behavior and Temperament: Monocentropus balfouri is generally calm and docile but can show defensive behavior, such as rearing up or running for cover when threatened. It is known for being slow-moving and relatively easy to handle compared to other tarantula species.
Habitat and Environment Needs: This species is primarily terrestrial but may use vertical space for webbing. It requires a dry environment with low humidity, ideally between 60-70%. The temperature should be maintained around 22-28°C, mimicking its natural arid environment on Socotra Island.
Feeding: Like most tarantulas, it feeds on live insects, including crickets, locusts, and roaches. It is an opportunistic feeder and will hunt when hungry but also take food offered to it.
Additional Information: The slow-growing nature and distinctive coloration of Monocentropus balfouri make it a highly desirable species for collectors. However, due to its specific habitat requirements, it is recommended for advanced keepers who are familiar with maintaining arid environments.
