Citharacanthus cyaneus originates from the Caribbean, particularly Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti). This terrestrial species inhabits dry forest and scrubland environments where it creates burrows or hides beneath natural cover such as rocks, logs, or root systems. It is known for its attractive dark body coloration with subtle blue tones that give the species its name.
Behavior and Temperament:
Like many Old World tarantulas, Citharacanthus cyaneus can be defensive and quick to react when disturbed. This species may adopt threat postures and can deliver a bite if provoked. Handling is not recommended, and it is better suited for experienced keepers who are comfortable working with fast and defensive tarantulas.
Habitat and Environment Needs:
This species does well in a terrestrial enclosure with adequate floor space and several centimeters of substrate for burrowing. A dry to slightly humid environment works well, with a hide provided to help the spider feel secure. Good ventilation is important to prevent stagnant conditions.
Feeding:
Citharacanthus cyaneus is a strong feeder and will readily accept a variety of prey items including crickets, roaches, and other appropriately sized insects. Juveniles may be fed smaller prey more frequently, while adults can be fed larger prey items on a weekly schedule.
Additional Information:
This species is not commonly encountered in the hobby compared to other Caribbean tarantulas, making it an interesting addition for collectors. Due to its defensive nature and speed, it is best maintained by keepers with some experience in handling Old World species.
