Behavior and Temperament: Grammostola iheringi is described as generally hardy and with a strong feeding response. However, unlike some of the more sedate Grammostola species it can be more active, faster moving and somewhat more defensive meaning it may stand a threat pose, flick urticating hairs, or retreat quickly when disturbed.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Native to the Entre Rios region of Brazil and possibly adjacent areas in relatively dry to semi-arid terrestrial habitats. In captivity, it prefers a terrestrial setup with moderate substrate depth (often 10-15 cm or more), a hide or shelter, and a shallow water dish. The substrate should be on the drier side compared to some rainforest species; good ventilation is important. Recommended ambient temperatures 22-27 °C with humidity around 55-65% juveniles may tolerate slightly higher to mimic its natural environment.
Feeding: This species eats live insects like crickets, roaches and mealworms with a strong appetite. Juveniles may be fed every 5-10 days; adults can be fed every 10-14 days or longer if well-filled abdomen. Uneaten prey should be removed. Provide a shallow, clean water dish at all times.
Additional Information: Grammostola iheringi is considered by some to be one of the largest species in the genus, reaching leg-spans up to ~20 cm or more in ideal circumstances. Females may live 20+ years; males often much shorter. Because of its combination of size, robustness and somewhat livelier behaviour, it is an excellent display specimen but keepers should still approach with caution: it grows large, needs secure housing and is less “beginner‐friendly” than the most docile species.
