Behavior and Temperament: This species is highly defensive, fast, and easily agitated. It will often deliver threat poses, ground slapping, and may bite when disturbed rather than retreating. It lacks urticating hairs as typical of Old World tarantulas and thus its primary defence is speed and potent venom.
Habitat and Environment Needs: Native to the humid rainforest floors of Southeast Asia, Myanmar, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam this species is an obligate burrower. In captivity it requires a deep substrate preferably 10-20 cm or more, high humidity (70-85%), warm temperatures (24-28 °C) and secure, escape proof housing. It is best kept in an enclosure with depth for tunneling and minimal disturbance.
Feeding: Feed a variety of live insects crickets, roaches and mealworms. Juveniles typically every 3-10 days, adults may be fed every 2-3 weeks or as appetite dictates. Remove uneaten prey promptly to avoid stress or risk to the tarantula. Provide a shallow water dish or occasional drip for hydration.
Additional Information: Because of its defensive nature and potent venom, Cyriopagopus lividus is recommended only for advanced keepers. Its beautiful blue coloration and reclusive burrowing lifestyle make it popular among experienced hobbyists, but the risk of escape, bite, or setup failure is higher. Provide proper substrate depth, ventilation, temperature/humidity control, and minimal disturbance.
